Catra is clearly being set up for some kind of redemption arc and the show goes out of it’s way to show you that her actions are because she was a scared, abused, manipulated child who only ever had one person to lean on before they left her alone. Kind of like Zuko, who also did some pretty horrible things before his redemption. Both of their arcs have amazing writing (so far) and they’re both amazing and complex characters. However the fanbases’ is reactions to these two characters are very different. Everyone loved Zuko even before his redemption (myself included) but a bunch of people are treating Catra like she’s irredeemable bitch. Obviously many people still love her and don’t feel this way, however, unlike Zuko, she’s divisive. Certain people who hate her do so passionately and violently, even if they’re a minority they’re very vocal. Their hatred of her goes beyond the reasonable amount of hate anyone should have for a cartoon character, especially one that well-written. Basically… She’s being given the “Vriscourse” treatment. It’s not fueled because they care about “criticizing her actions” (The show explicitly says they’re bad as is) but because they’re looking for any excuse to just violently hate a women, or because they believe women who aren’t perfect should be violently hated. Even if they don’t realize it and this hate is internalized misogyny that they’ve yet to unlearn. Just look at how no one every critiques Zutara, a het ship, since Zuko was reformed. But as soon people wanna ship a reformed Catra with Adora (Which will happen at some point as things are going!) it’s a huge huge issue. It’s transparent, we all know why the standards are different, even if we don’t realize it.
