Save The Blogs!

shadow-spires:

Okay, folks. So. Tumblr’s jumped the shark in a big way, and I’m not even just talking about indiscriminately blocking all “adult” content on a platform that IS, in fact, primarily 18+.

Many blogs, like the wonderful @blackkatmagic , that are not especially NSFW have vanished.

(And I for one LIKE being able to go to curated porn blogs run by actual people and have a chance of finding stuff to my taste, it was one of the things that kept me on this hellsite, but that’s another issue entirely.)

I know lots of people are talking about migrating, but none of us are sure to where yet. Pillowfort seems to be an option, some people are talking about Twitter. But for now, it’s a mess, and even if we knew where we were going, it’s often a huge process, and a lot of us have stuff on tumblr that ONLY exists there.

One possible quick solution to save your blogs, both NSFW and personal, is to import it to WordPress. I found this solution through from frantic googling on how to save an entire blog, text posts an all. There are several apps for downloading all the pictures from a tumblr, (Plently for Windows, but only a few paid ones for mac, of which Tumbelog Picture Downloader is working for me so far) but this is the only solution I’ve seen so far that allows you to save EVERYTHING. I downloaded my NSFW blog in like 10 min. My regular blog, which is significantly larger, is in the process of importing, but I don’t anticipate any problems. I will, of course, update you if I have any.

This tutorial I found worked really easily. http://quickguide (.) tumblr (.) com/post/39780378703/backing-up-your-tumblr-blog-to-wordpress

I put parenthesis around the .’s like we’re back in FF-Hell, just in case tumblr’s new thing about outgoing links kicks in. You know what to do.

To break it down, just in case:

Sign up for a WordPress.com account at wordpress (.) com/start

You’ll have to create an account, with your email, a username, and a password. They should send you a confirmation email immediately, check it, activate it, and you’re good to go.

On the site, it will ask you for a site name. That page asks you a bunch of other information too, but you only have to fill out the site name.

Then you have to give your site a URL. If you’re lucky, your tumblr URL is still available, if not you’ll have to come up with another one, sorry.

It will tell you if that option is still available for free.

Then it will ask you to pick a plan. Free is really good enough, I swear.

Now you’re set up! You can import your tumblr!

The only differences from the linked tutorial are that the Import button is now on the first level menu, not in tools.

Hit Import, then you have to follow the link for “other importers”  at the bottom, to find the option for Tumblr.

Then you’ll have to sign in with tumblr, using your normal tumblr credentials. You’ll be redirected there automatically.

You’ll have to allow WordPress permissions on your blog.

Then your blogs, including all your sideblogs, will show up in wordpress.

Hit import, wait a WHILE depending on the size of your blog, and you’re done!

ALSO!!

I made my NSFW blog private for now, since I don’t know WP’s policy on NSFW.

This means that to access it, someone has to have an account and request access. But hey, part of our problem on this hellsite has been people going places they aren’t wanted, so I don’t personally see this as a bad thing. They can send a request from the landing site on your blog, you get an email, click a link in the email, and PRESTO, they have access.

To make it private, go to Settings > Reading > Site Visibility. Go back and check, it took me changing the setting twice for it to actually stick.

tl;dr, you can import your entire blog to wordpress in just a few steps.

I’m going to tag the hell out of this, in no particular order. PLEASE reblog this and spread the word so people know it’s an option. If you’re having trouble, PM me, and I’m happy to help.

Hewwo I just wanted to say looking at your amazing art made me want to start drawing again so thank you for being you. I love your art (I found you through delta rune fan art) and it made me want to dust off my tablet. However, while I’m ok with faces, my bodies aren’t really that good as I haven’t practiced them. Do you have any tips or tricks to help with that?

seiishindraws:

Hello! I’m happy to hear you’ve been motivated again, and by my work no less! that means a lot to me~ ;;;

As for your question I’ll try my best to answer it here, using some deltarune characters because why not!

So my approach to drawing bodies is first establishing basic shapes. So when I sketch and I’m trying to figure out their bodies I do something like this (though its usually a lot messier and only comprehensible by me)

you can simplify it further too! like so:

and then after i establish how their body works i draw their clothes on top. kinda like this:

sometimes i don’t need to completely know everything that’s under their clothes and sometimes i use the shape of their clothes rather than relying on the shape of their bodies…. if that makes sense??

i do the same with bigger characters as well, with more of a focus on shapes since sometimes fat makes it harder to make out the shape of some bones, if you get what I mean:

Also, it’s super super SUPER important to draw from real life and regularly use references, its unavoidable, and it will help immensely with your learning. For gesture drawing I usually use the site line-of-action .com.

Also also!! dont be afraid to reference other artists!! there are tons of artists out there with an amazing grasp on anatomy and sometimes looking at how they structure their character anatomy could help you grasp something you didn’t before.

I hope this helps??? Sorry its not terribly detailed ^v^;;;

A few years ago, when I was living in the housing co-op and looking for a quick cookie recipe, I came across a blog post for something called “Norwegian Christmas butter squares.” I’d never found anything like it before: it created rich, buttery and chewy cookies, like a vastly superior version of the holiday sugar cookies I’d eaten growing up. About a year ago I went looking for the recipe again, and failed to find it. The blog had been taken down, and it sent me into momentary panic.

Luckily, I remembered enough to find it on the Wayback Machine, and quickly copied it into a file that I’ve saved ever since. I probably make these cookies about once a month, and they last about five days around my voracious husband – they’re fantastic with a cup of bitter coffee or tea. I’m skeptical that there is something distinctively Norwegian about these cookies, but they do seem like the perfect thing to eat on a cold day.

Norwegian Christmas Butter Squares

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 egg
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp salt
Turbinado/ Raw Sugar for dusting

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Chill a 9×13″ baking pan in the freezer. Do not grease the pan.

Using a mixer, blend the butter, egg, sugar, and salt together until it is creamy.  Add the flour and vanilla and mix using your hands until the mixture holds together in large clumps. If it seems overly soft, add a little extra flour.

Using your hands, press the dough out onto the chilled and ungreased baking sheet until it is even and ¼ inch thick.  Dust the top of the cookies evenly with raw sugar.

Bake at 400 degrees until the edges turn a golden brown, about 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven. Let cool for about five minutes before cutting the cooked dough into squares. Remove the squares from the warm pan using a spatula.

So I tried this recipe.

And it is GREAT.

It basically makes the platonic ideal of commercial sugar cookies, only in bar form. When I give them to people (which I do a lot, because this is one of those simple recipes where the results seem very impressive), I just tell them they’re sugar cookie bars.

Can you post your meatballs recipe? It sounds tasty and I’m looking for new recipes to try (I learned to cook while I was a vegetarian and now I’m not but I have *no idea* how cooking meat dishes works).

v1als:

hell yeah I can! these worked out pretty well though they are without egg (the usual binding agent) because I didn’t have egg in the house when I made them lmao. they ended up tasting really good and didn’t end up dry or anything though!

as they’re baked you bake them in whatever sauce you want to eat them with. usually it’s a tomato sauce (I make my own) but really go nuts yanno. just make sure there’s enough to coat them as they bake so they don’t burn!

Lavrentiy’s Baked Kinda Spicy No Egg Because He Ran Out Meatballs

ingredients

  • 500g beef mince
  • one onion chopped finely (make sure it’s very fine or it’ll stop the mixture sticking together properly!)
  • one tablespoon paprika
  • two tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • salt & pepper
  • flour to coat the meatballs
  • one teaspoon of chili powder
  • one teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • oil (I used olive oil; vegetable oil would likely work too)

equipment

  • a large mixing bowl
  • a frying pan
  • an ovenproof dish
  • some aluminium (kitchen) foil

how to make this pile of stuff into meatballs

  • preheat ya oven (400F/200C)
  • get a large mixing bowl and throw in the mince, the finely chopped onion, chili powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, and bread crumbs
  • mix it all up. you’re gonna have to use your hands so it all mushes together nicely.
  • using your hands, scoop out small amounts of the mixture and shape them into little balls. I used a tablespoon and took a reasonable scoop, and they made some nicely-sized ones. I think we managed to get 16 out of this mixture.
  • sprinkle some flour on a clean surface (like you’re about to knead bread) and lightly roll the meatballs in them so they have a nice coating
  • heat some of the oil in the pan until it’s nice and hot (but not spitting at you) and throw the meatballs in
  • lightly fry them so they’re slightly browned all over – you’re not cooking them, you’re just sealing in the flavour and juices
  • put them into an ovenproof dish and set to the side

this is where you make whatever sauce it is you’re going to make, or tip the jar in, or what have you.

  • pour sauce over meatballs so they’re nice and covered
  • cover the dish with foil and put in the oven for 30-40 minutes
  • about 10 minutes before they’re done, remove the foil so they have a chance to crisp up slightly
  • serve them with whatever: rice or pasta, or in our case mashed potatoes!

so you know how deep learning & neural network “AI training” is like, “here’s a task, and by trying billions of times the computer will eventually find the best way to achieve that task” ?

Someone is compiling a document of every time an AI ended up achieving the programmed goal in unintended ways, instead of what was actually meant, and it’s an amazing read. (you can also submit your own examples)

Creatures bred for speed grow really tall and generate high velocities by falling over

Evaluation metric: “the output of sort is in sorted order”
Solution: “always output the empty set”

Reward-shaping a soccer robot for touching the ball caused it to learn to get to the ball and vibrate touching it as fast as possible

RL agent that is allowed to modify its own body learns to have extremely long legs that allow it to fall forward and reach the goal.

Just want to come back to this post and add this amazing example as well

After many failed attempts. It decided it was easier to walk upside down

the funniest thing in the entire pirates of the caribbean series is definitely that one scene in At World’s End where they have parlay but davy jones is part of it, and rather than have him stand in the shallows or something they get a big bucket of water and have in stand on it on shore

who thought of that idea? who thought “put davy jones in a bucket of water” and had the guts to suggest it aloud? and then who went “hey that sounds like a great idea!”

at some point someone told davy jones their idea was for him to stand in a bucket of water and he agreed to it

*stands majestically in a bucket*

ok but notice the trail of buckets behind him meaning he walked from the ocean through three other buckets of water before he got into the one hes standing in

It’s even funnier when you consider how he must have figured all this out in the first place.

Some folks are asking “well, if he can avoid the no-dry-land curse simply by standing in a bucket, doesn’t that ruin his whole motivation?”, but he’s not on dry land here.

The parley takes place on a sandbar – which, for the unfamiliar, is a temporary “island” of sand deposited by breaking waves, unconnected with the shore, that spends most of its time submerged, being exposed only at low tide.

What Jones is doing here is rules-lawyering his curse. Can you imagine the trial and error he must have gone through in order to determine that this would actually work?

“Okay, do islands count as dry land? How about parts of the shore below the high tide mark? Reefs? Shoals? What if I stand in a pool of water on a shoal? Does it have to be seawater, or will any water do? Does it have to be a natural tidepool, or can it be something artificial, like a bucket?”

What I am saying is that there must have been a process.

Pretty sure that this implies that the reverse – a bucket of sand, floating on the water (big bucket with just a bit of sand), would qualify as dry land. That’s absurd, so I’m pretty sure that his lawyer pulled a fast one over the curse governor.

It may be absurd, but the text of the film bears it out. Davy Jones can sense the presence of his heart while it’s at sea, but not while it’s on land (indeed, that’s why he buried it on land in the first place: to break his connection with it) – yet placing the heart in a simple jar of dirt conceals it from Jones’ awareness just as surely as burial on land does, even if the jar is on a boat at the time. Suitably prepared vessels filled with dirt absolutely count as dry land for the purpose of Jones’ curse.

Then the reverse should also be true. If he buried it in a jar of water, no matter how far inland it is, he would be able to sense it. So by this logic, any container of seawater counts as not dry land, ergo, the bucket is a perfectly viable loophole.

Not necessarily. It’s traditionally a lot easier to accidentally get whammied by a curse than it is to weasel around it – I figure that’s why he’s using multiple layers of indirection here. He’s forbidden to set foot on dry land, but it’s technically not dry land (it’s a sandbar, a non-permanent landform exposed only at low tide) and he technically didn’t set foot on it (he’s standing in a bucket of water). It’s entirely possible that either one of those things alone wouldn’t make the grade.

okay but this all raises one further, very important question: if it’s specifically “dry land” he’s forbidden from, what about wetlands.

can Davy Jones fight you in salt marshes? can he throw down in a peat bog?Swamp Battle?

This is the quality content I come to Tumblr for.

could he step on land if his shoes are wet?

No matter how ridiculous PotC gets I will love it. Especially when it results in conversations like this

What if he crawls around on his hands and knees, with his feet raised slightly into the air? Can he walk on his hands? Can he ride around in a litter or a wheelchair?

can he be in a wheelbarrow?

What if he flies over dry land? Like in a hot air balloon, or in the claws of a giant bird?

What if he’s carried by two swallows using a strand of creeper?

European swallows or African swallows?

hypothesis: the salt & pepper diner experiment can no longer be conducted as it stands, because everyone is now fully attuned to the opening bars of tom jones’ “what’s new pussycat?”, classically conditioned into a fight-or-flight response. however, this experience can be replicated using 21 back-to-back plays of lou bega’s 1999 hit song “mambo no. 5″, as the general response to “mambo no. 5″ being played twice in a row is not, “hey someone’s playing “mambo no. 5″ again,” but rather, “hey, lou bega’s 1999 hit song “mambo no. 5″ is a lot longer than i first thought.”

Do you have any tips on how to better draw hands? I’ve seen your work and you draw great hands

kadabura:

Oh wow, that’s a compliment I’d never expect to receive :,D I have so much trouble with hands myself haha – but this prompted me to go through my patreon dumps to pick out some examples bc like, honestly…I haven’t really just looked at how I draw hands in quite some time.

I feel it’s pertinent to point out i can only draw two kinds of hands: glove and monster lmao. But I guess I just draw hands with very simple shapes?? very boxy fingers. My style is also sketchy and unpolished which let’s me get away with more shadowy, less-defined hands (mostly when drawing those monster claws)

I wish I could give you some good advice beyond “look up references and practice”, but that’s about all I can say :,D I’m sure there are some helpful tutorials online that know more about the technical aspect of hands than I!
